I managed to fix this issue for my setup. I have the same chipset and after several hours going round in circles (I applied the realtek patch, forced the alsa drivers to restart etc as mentioned elsewhere etc. Etc.) I eventually managed to get my sound working. I used alsamixer via the following terminal command: alsamixer Press F6 to select 'HD Audio Generic' (or whichever option corresponds to your realtek chip).
#5381790 Posted on: 04:47 PM ou can now download the new Realtek HD Audio 2.81 driver. The new build now offers full support for Windows 10 and adds some more Codecs as well. This was my original goal and plan, and I have now achieved it. So for anybody else wanting the same result. It's stupidly simple! Just CHECK ALL THE MULTI-CHANNEL ITEMS IN 'SUPPORTED FORMATS' for your external device to which the optical connection will go. That's all it takes.
