'The Thing' is a great barf-bag movie, all right, but is it any good? I found it disappointing, for two reasons: the superficial characterizations and the implausible behavior of the scientists on that icy outpost. The Thing is just flat out one of the greatest movies ever, regardless of genre. The performances are great all around, the score is fantastic, and the sense of paranoia that develops is gripping. And of course, those special effects are still horrific.

They knew what was coming. This was not going to end well. And that feeling is exactly what makes THE THING such an effective horror film. No matter which style of scary movie you enjoy, 's 1982 sci fi-horror opus has it all: • Buckets of disgusting gore and body horror? • A blistering crescendo of tension and suspense? • Heart-pounding jump scares? The blood test scene has one of the best of all time.

Expert developed a sequence for the end of the film where MacReady is confronted by the gigantic Blair-Thing. Cook created a miniature model of the set and filmed wide-angle shots of the monster in stop motion, but Carpenter was not convinced by the effect and used only a few seconds of it. It took 50 people to operate the actual Blair-Thing puppet. The production intended to use a camera centrifuge—a rotating drum with a fixed camera platform—for the Palmer-Thing scene, allowing him to seem to run straight up the wall and across the ceiling. Again, the cost was too high and the idea abandoned for a stuntman falling into frame onto a floor made to look like the outpost's ceiling.
