I've been trying to get this working for a long while now, and I've been needing to reset my oil light for almost as long. I have the BMW Scanner 1.4.0 OBD device along with a pac-man 21 pin adapter for my '99 528i, and I cannot get the drivers installed correctly. 
Every time I open the program, it shows that the device isn't connected, but the driver are installed.
The annoying thing is that upgrades happen fairly often. I have a similar problem with the webcam on my laptop. With windows 10 it stopped working and I found some new drivers but windows seems to keep swapping them around and the webcam works about every 3rd time I boot windows. I really hate windows 10.

Bmw Scanner 1.4.0 Driver
In the directory all I have is: C/ BMWScan140 (folder)/ BMWScan140.exe (folder)/ Drivers (folder)/ 7 FTDI files There doesn't seem to be a start up file (.exe) for this program. The.exe listed above is a folder name. So I'm wondering. Could it be my virus software (Webroot) or maybe just a bad zip file?
I mean it really sucks. Then I saw the PA Soft threads and got the old thing out. Put XP on it (a real challenge to say the least) and bought a BMW OBD2 scanner from X360. It works pretty well. To me, most any old software like PA Soft will work after you tinker with it and figure out what needs done. But the next Windows upgrade you get could trash all your progress.
6) Go back to the main program, find out device manager and click BMW Scanner to select driver software you want to update. 7) Select “Browse my computer for driver software”>> “Universal serial bus controllers”>> “FTDI driver” >> “USB Serial Converter”, then accept window prompt to go on operation 8) Install the FTDI driver 9) Wait some seconds until the BMW scanner detects the software.
Thanks, SteveYou probably have latest Microsoft generic driver installed from Windows Update. 
And you are right there are modules that takes hours to finish and any interruption in the process will surely brick that module. You can get a cheap china clone ICOM but finding a refutable vendor selling a good working ICOM is not easy.
