I really enjoy listening to many of the 5.1 DTS audio cd's currently available but wish they had a larger selection. Many of these DTS CD's /DVD-A discs produce excellent and eveloping multi channel surround. This is partly the reason why Dolby and Meridian introduced a new high resolution format know as DVD-Audio. Both Dolby and DTS offer surround sound codecs for 5.1, 6.1 (rare), and 7.1 setups, where the first number indicates the number of small surround speakers and the “.1” is a separate channel for a subwoofer.
The real Dolby vs. DTS controversy arises because when dealing with different formats that use different coding techniques to deliver practically the same end result, it is not easy to define what constitutes better quality sound.
